Mindset

Hajj is a tremendous ibadah. If you manage to complete it properly, then all of your sins forgiven and the reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing but Jannah.

The Prophet ﷺ says:

“The performance of Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous ones. And the reward for Hajj Mabrur (pilgrimage accepted by Allah) is nothing but Paradise.”

Bukhari

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not utter any obscene speech or do any evil deed, will go back (free of sin) as his mother bore him.”

Bukhari, Muslim

To gain an accepted Hajj, prepare yourself in advance to not backbite, to not complain about things and not to show off. This applies before, during and after Hajj.

There is a new phenomenon of taking selfies and posing for photos in front of the Kaaba. A pilgrim should fear showing off their good deeds. No doubt, a pilgrim is excited and happy to go on Hajj, the greatest journey we ever undertake, so will want to tell people. The problem comes when people pose while doing acts of worship or go overboard.

“So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him”

Quran 53:32

Showing off can happen in three places:

  1. Before the action where your intention becomes to show off
  2. During the action where you’ve done some worship sincerely but you start showing off half way through
  3. After the action where you did it all for the sake of Allah but you boast it and show off your action leading to waste the good that you did
