Ziyarah in Madinah

Ziyarah means to visit religious sites or sites from the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Often times people become confused between those sites which are sunnah to visit - meaning it carries reward to visit them - and sites which are interesting due to their historically significance in the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

We will cover the sites which are recommended to visit by the Prophet ﷺ which carry extra rewards to visit.

There is a hop on and off tour bus service for Ziyarah in Madinah. It costs  SR80 adults, SR40 children, family (2+2) SR200. There are 12 us stops and tour guides speak up to 16 Languages. The duration of the tour is approximately 2hrs.

The Cemeteries

These are sunnah to visit because the Prophet ﷺ told us to visit cemeteries to remember death. Women are not permitted to enter the graveyards in Saudi Arabia.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Visit the graves, for they remind you of the Hereafter." (Muslim)

When visiting the graveyard read the following du'a:

“Assalaamu ‘alaykum ahl al-diyaar min al-mu’mineen wa’l-Muslimeen, in sha Allah bikum laahiqoon, as’al Allaha lana wa lakum al-‘aafiyah”

(Peace be upon you O people of the dwellings, believers and Muslims, In sha Allah we will join you, I ask Allah to keep us and you safe and sound)

Baqi al-Gharqad

This is the graveyard near Masjid an-Nabawi often wrongly called “Jannah-tul Baqi”. Here many sahaba and family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are buried.

The graves of the martyrs of Uhud

These are the graves of many sahaba who were martyred in the battle of Uhud including Hamza رضي الله عنه, the uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Their graves are located next to where the battle of Uhud took place.

Masjid Quba

This is the first mosque established by the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever purifies himself in his house then comes to the mosque of Quba and prays there, he will have a reward like that for Umrah.”

Ahmad
